Analysis of the Competitive Landscape and Development Prospects in the Electroplating Industry
Author:
The electroplating industry is relatively chaotic.
The development of China’s electroplating industry can be traced back to before the founding of the People’s Republic of China; however, a relatively complete electroplating production system was initially established only after the 1980s. Entering the 21st century, under the dual pressures of improving product quality and increasing environmental protection requirements, the electroplating industry began shifting its focus toward greater emphasis on management and environmental protection, sparking a boom in clean production.
After years of development, the electroplating industry has become an indispensable part of China’s industrial system. From tiny components like screws to large-scale products such as automobiles, aircraft, and ships, all rely on electroplating. At the same time, the market size of the electroplating industry is showing a steady growth trend. By... In 2017, the Chinese electroplating industry’s market size reached nearly 150 billion yuan, totaling 148.78 billion yuan—a year-on-year increase of 11.40%. The market size is projected to reach 159.66 billion yuan in 2018.
With the rapid development of the electroplating industry, a large number of enterprises—both domestic and international—have entered the market. However, these enterprises are primarily concentrated in economically developed regions with convenient transportation, such as the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the Bohai Rim area. As a result, the electroplating industry nationwide can broadly be divided into four regional tiers.
Among these, Tier 1 regions include Shenzhen, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Guangdong, Guangzhou, Beijing, and Shandong; Tier 2 regions include Tianjin, Anhui, Chongqing, Sichuan, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, and Shenyang; Tier 3 regions include Jiangxi, Hebei, Henan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Ningxia, Qinghai, and Jilin; Tier 4 regions include Guangxi, Heilongjiang, Gansu, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hainan, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia.
The development focus of electroplating enterprises varies across different regions. For example, in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions, the primary focus is on electroplating production units—meaning that individual companies have dedicated electroplating departments within their facilities. In the Yangtze River Delta region, including provinces like Hubei and Hunan, most electroplating enterprises are integrated companies that primarily engage in processing; these enterprises generally operate as small-scale workshops. In the Pearl River Delta region, the number of electroplating production units roughly equals that of small electroplating workshops. Relatively larger production facilities are mainly located in cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai, while smaller workshops tend to cluster in cities like Zhongshan, Dongguan, and Huizhou.
As can be seen from this, China’s electroplating industry is relatively fragmented and involves a large number of related enterprises; few comprehensive and fully integrated electroplating enterprises exist. Currently, the number of enterprises nationwide involved in electroplating bases—including those engaged in processing, equipment, materials, technology, and research—stands at: There are over 32,000 electroplating enterprises. Among these, there are more than 5,100 suppliers of electroplating raw materials, over 5,200 pieces of electroplating equipment, over 1,900 electroplating additives, over 1,100 electroplating processes, and more than 12,400 electroplating production (processing) facilities. There are also over 7,000 categorized electroplating enterprises. The top 50 largest electroplating enterprises are generally dominated by foreign-invested companies.
